The chance for each reader to create his/her own journey and his/her own Tempo di Libri (“Time for Books”): at Fiera Milano Rho until 19:30 and, with Fuori Tempo di Libri, in town for a fantastic book party
Tempo di Libri is here at last. The countdown is ending and from 19 to 23 April the Fiera Milano Rho pavilions will be hosting the first edition of the new Italian Publishing Fair. It will be a fantastic, innovative party; starting from relations between publishers, authors and readers. Publishers were involved directly in the program: not as external parties, but as advisers; authors replied to the invitation to take part in meetings that are not the normal book presentation routine, with curiosity and enthusiasm; then readers will be the true protagonists. Using the alphabet tool (a grid dividing up event appointments) each person will be able to build – and discover – his/her personal Tempo di Libri, responding to the seduction of an author’s name, a story, a great topic, an atmosphere or just choosing a favourite letter.
Designed and created by La Fabbrica del Libro (the company set up by the AIE – Associazione Italiana Editori and Fiera Milano), Tempo di Libri is an immersive event, designed to suggest content that can be aggregated starting from any interest and curiosity: 720 appointments, 17 meeting halls plus an auditorium with 1,000 seating capacity, 35 thousand square metres of space and over 400 exhibitors including publishing houses, magazines, associations, libraries, book shops, public bodies, start ups. The guest list includes about 2000 authors, with great names of contemporary international literature and the most representative Italian ones, both narrative and essay writing, like Adonis, Simonetta Agnello Hornby, David Almond, Corrado Augias, Brit Bennett, Gianrico Carofiglio, Sveva Casati Modignani, Aidan Chambers, Javier Cercas, Guy Delisle, Tom Drury, Ildefonso Falcones, Marcello Fois, David Grossman, François Jullien, Sophie Kinsella, M.G. Leonard, Carlo Lucarelli, Maurizio Maggiani, Valerio Magrelli, Valerio Massimo Manfredi, Melania Mazzucco, Michela Murgia, Edna O’Brien, R.J. Palacio, Patrizia Paterlini-Bréchot, Francesco Piccolo, Roberto Piumini, Massimo Recalcati, Clara Sánchez, Roberto Saviano, Luis Sepúlveda, Walter Siti, Licia Troisi, Andrea Vitali, Irvine Welsh, Abraham Yehoshua. People will be taking part from the worlds of show business, culture, journalism, politics, sport, scientific research and technological innovation. Opening and inclusiveness are the key words regulating all aspects of the Exhibition. Tempo di Libri is for everybody: from the book lover who buys dozens of books every year to the occasional reader; from who is still a paper fan (for the most enthusiastic book-lovers the appointment is at the antique books stand managed by the Aldus Club) to those in love with e-books, to those who use both. The dialectics between analogical and digital will have been surpassed in a program with room for reading in the dark and out loud, audio-books and comics, mixtures with cinema and music, with the web and video games. The alphabet has also been adopted by the Lombardy Region, present with a stand and several activities.
The Exhibition’s visual identity sums up its being across-the-board, its journey through symbols and story worlds. In fact, we have chosen the conceptual illustrator Magoz, born in Barcelona but “nomad” for both all the countries he has lived in and which inspired him, and for the meanings he chooses to transmit each time, filtered by his minimalist, yet poetic, pencil. For this first experience illustrating for an exhibition, he has concentrated on the object-concept of book, explaining all it can become: a window on feelings, a door to the world, a welcoming place to dream in and lots more still.
Tempo di Libri will offer a window on the activities and contents of some festivals in Italy, which could appear on the cultural and project plans of other similar initiatives and present themselves to the public by organising meetings. At the Exhibition you will learn about: the Festival Isola delle Storie di Gavoi, the Festival della Mente di Sarzana, pordenonelegge, the Lezioni di Storia, the children’s festival Mare di libri, Letterature Festival Internazionale di Roma, scrittorincittà, Leggermente, Libero di Scrivere and Festival degli Scrittori – Premio Von Rezzori. A rich choice of appointments will involve newspapers, literary magazines and websites like la Lettura Corriere della Sera, TuttoLibri La Stampa, Rivista Studio, Pagina99, Nuovi Argomenti, Il Post, Lercio.it, Donna Moderna, Panorama, Icon, Icon Design, Focus, TheFLR. The following will also be present with their own stands: RAI, Corriere della Sera and Robinson la Repubblica.
There will be no age limits, as the rich section dedicated to children and schools proves with its program of meetings and laboratories: from children of preschool age (thanks to the alliance with Nati per Leggere) to the pupils of primary and secondary schools. With the alphabet compass, and its map with the ideal path for schools, girls and boys will exchange points of view with great Italian and international guests and can choose from a wide range of topics. And also thanks to the partnership between the Exhibition and Lucca Comics & Games there will be a focus on illustrators, fantasy and comics. There will be laboratories with Focus Junior, Sale&Pepe and in collaboration with the editorial staff of Topolino and, to bring youngsters closer to the world awaiting them, room for the school-work interchange. Tempo di Libri is for those studying at university too, through collaboration with the Milanese, Lombard universities and with those from all over Italy and with the Masters’ in Publishing.
The same approach will be dedicated to the publishing chain, with a professional program counting more than sixty appointments: from the translator profession to market surveys, from focus on internationalisation to analyses of the new frontiers of innovation (often handled combined with the more transversal of the Exhibition sections, the one dedicated to the digital world). And seeing that talking to all readers means discussing all forms of reading, the professional program will also offer a convention presenting the innovative study by Pepe Research, created and designed by AIE at an indication of the Innovation Group, on how we read in 2017: from paper to e-book, from comics to graphic novels, from audio-books to apps, from traditional reading groups to modern on-line communities. And it will photograph from all angles, thanks to the Italian institute of statistics Istat, the non reader Italian and those who have become non readers in recent years. Tempo di Libri will offer operators the chance to explore new business opportunities, especially in the space reserved at the MIRC – Milan International Rights Center, the meeting square for Italian and foreign publishing groups, literary agents and small publishers from over 30 countries. For gastronomy fans the exhibition has dedicated Tempo di Libri A Tavola: 700 m2 with show-cooking and laboratories for everyone, enogastronomic publishing, meetings with chefs and tastings.
Tempo di Libri will have a network structure, open to contaminations and webs, but without confusion and noise: most of the meeting rooms will be closed, guaranteeing guests and audience the right respect for listening, reflecting and sharing knowledge. From this point of view, the event can count on the cutting edge structures of Fiera Milano Rho, with pavilions (1, reserved for MIRC, 2 and 4), ideal for an event like this, served excellently by public transport thanks to the nearby train and underground stations and efficient connections with Linate and Malpensa airports and Milan itself. The Exhibition will have a special relationship with the chief Lombard town: after closing time, Tempo di Libri will continue all over town with Fuori Tempo di Libri, reading out loud, in collaboration with BookCity, literary cocktails, games, the evening opening of libraries and book shops, musical performances and reading marathons (in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan) and with RadioCity (from 21 to 23 April) in the Unicredit Pavilion of Piazza Gae Aulenti. For Tempo di Libri, Milano Linate and Milano Malpensa will be the first Italian airports to host BookCrossing, in collaboration with the AIE. Passengers will be able to leave a book and pick up another one from the specific bookshelves built in recycled carton at the gates and baggage collection areas of the Milanese airports. The Tempo di Libri program is the result of collaboration with four curators (Chiara Valerio for the general program, Pierdomenico Baccalario for 0-18, Giovanni Peresson for the professional program and Nina Klein for the digital paths) and the Scientific Committee coordinated by Renata Gorgani, president of the Fabbrica del Libro.
Tempo di Libri is also on-line: www.tempodilibri.it, Facebook (@TempodiLibriMilano), Twitter (@TempodiLibri) and Instagram (@tempodilibri), #TdL17. In the two weeks before the Exhibition, social network activities will be intensified through the campaign È Tempo di Leggere (“It’s Time to Read”), inviting everyone to dedicate at least an hour a day to reading a book sharing his/her preferred beginning. Social mobilisation will reach its peak from 19 to 23 April, with a true interactive story, day by day, by Gaja Cenciarelli, Giacomo Mazzariol and Ginevra Lamberti. The Giornale della Libreria daily, the event’s official daily paper, will signal those unmissable appointments in and outside the Exhibition every morning in a real four-page newspaper.
